After 42 roommates and time to reflect I submit these basic rules for living peaceably with others:
- Always pay your rent and bills on time. Always.
- Treat shared areas like public space.
- Ask before using - even if you know they don't mind.
- Do all your dishes as quickly as possible.
- Label your food.
- Do not eat fish.
- Things break.
- If you would feel really bad if something of yours broke, don't put it out to share.
- Pay your tithing so you stay flush.
- Eat so you stay sane.
- Read your scriptures so you stay kind.
- Notice your surroundings and react.
- Take your own good advice.
- Say hello and goodbye.
- Pray for your roommates - daily.
- If you vacuum your carpet at least weekly your carpet will stay very nice and comforting.
- Do not put holes in the walls.
- Clean at least one thing every day. Tidy all the time.
- Apologize.
- Ask and clarify.
- Air things.
- Change.
- Mourn and let go of the roommates who go and quickly welcome those who come.
- Things change - enjoy the ride!
- Don't expect your roommates to follow these rules, they're keeping ones you're breaking.
